Local Emergency Planning Committee

The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) of Butler County was created as a direct result of Congress passing Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986. Congress enacted this law to help local communities protect public health, safety, and the environment from chemical hazards. The LEPC is the focal point for Title III activities in the community.

The LPEC, also known as the Commissioner's Advisory Council on Hazardous Materials, is currently composed of 20 members. Included are representatives from each of the following groups or organizations: County Commissioners, fire service, emergency medical services, law enforcement, business/industry, local government, emergency management, environmental agency, education, news media, and general public.

The mission of the LEPC is:

  • To develop plans to minimize emergency situations.
  • To ensure an appropriate response if an emergency occurs.
  • To create a forum to foster knowledge about chemical related hazards and protective measures.

LEPC members play a major role as part of the county emergency preparedness team offering input and support through planning, education, seminars, training sessions, etc. They work closely with the county's certified hazardous materials response team, Team 100, a highly trained group available for county-wide response in the event of a chemical emergency.

LEPC: a team of everyday people working hand-in-hand with emergency response teams and industry to ensure a safe Butler County for one and all.
